Stadbury is a Domesday farmstead beautifully situated high on the hillside above the River Avon estuary, between Churchstow and Aveton Gifford
Stadbury is approached by a private drive with lovely views, pictured above, over the Avon estuary to Dartmoor.
The Avon Estuary Walk between Bigbury and Bantham passes through Stadbury before heading down to the sandy Avon estuary, a heronry, a secluded creek, restored lime kiln, and, in 2 1/2 miles, Bantham (sandy beach, good pub,2 see page 137) where it joins the coast path. Popular area with birdwatchers - the rare cirl bunting seen and little egrets - and walkers.
The farmstead, stretching along the hillside, tree-sheltered, consists of a medieval manor house, farmhouse and several converted farm buildings, all Grade II listed. All are private from each other. The cottage is at one end of a 15th cent. farmhouse/Devon longhouse with its own games room (table tennis, darts, adjoining loo/washbasin, freezer) in the dovecote barn (on left in picture above).
The cottage has a small walled front garden (lawn, flowers, cobbled path, enclosed); large paved, secluded patio (walled, flowers, barbecue) and lawn (lovely views to Dartmoor) at the back.
You are welome to wander the owners' 11/2 acre garden with sea views and access to the Avon Estuary Walk. Inside there is a big, comfortable living/dining room (woodburner, CD player); light, well-equipped kitchen/breakfast room (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, larder fridge, breakfast table, door to patio).
